Figo Pet Insurance Overview

Figo is easily one of the most comprehensive pet insurance providers in the industry. It provides a plan that includes unlimited coverage, which is uncommon among providers, and 100% reimbursement, which is nearly unheard of elsewhere. Its Pet Cloud app allows policyholders to manage their pet's insurance, appointments, and records in one place. It also gives you access to its 24/7 virtual vet chat.

Its add-ons, which Figo calls Powerups, are also impressive. For one, its wellness plan offers coverage for spaying and neutering or teeth cleaning. It also offers coverage for microchipping and deworming. We were also impressed with its Extra Care package, which offers some features you don't see often. It covers costs if your pet is lost or stolen, kennel fees if you're hospitalized, and costs if your pet causes property damage that you're legally liable for.

Despite its comprehensive coverage, Figo is among the cheapest pet insurance companies. It also offers several opportunities for discounts. You can receive discounts if you enroll multiple pets, served in the military, or have a Costco membership.

Figo Pet Insurance Plans

Figo offers very comprehensive insurance with coverage for a variety of medical conditions and treatments. Some highlights of this coverage include the following:

  • Accidents and emergencies — Coverage for hospitalization, surgeries, and medication related to accidental like torn ligaments and accidental ingestion.
  • Cancer — Coverage for the cost of treatments like radiation, chemotherapy, and surgeries.
  • Chronic conditions — Coverage for ongoing and lifelong conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, Cushing's disease, and cancer.
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions Coverage for inherited disabilities such as heart disease and hip dysplasia.
  • Veterinary specialist treatments — Coverage for conditions requiring a veterinary specialist, such as a pet oncologist or allergy specialists.
  • Orthopedic conditions — Coverage for conditions such as torn cruciate ligaments, and hip dysplasia. Coverage for orthopedic conditions has a 30-day waiting period which can be waived with a healthy orthopedic exam.
  • Diagnostic testing — Coverage for medically necessary exams and tests including blood tests, urinalysis, CAT scans, MRIs, and X-rays.
  • Holistic and alternative treatments — Coverage for alternative medical procedures and treatments like acupuncture or hydrotherapy.

Figo also offers some perks for customers in addition to its covered conditions and treatments. It offers 24/7 virtual vet chat, which allows you text a licensed vet with any questions. They can help determine if your pet is exhibiting symptoms that are worth a visit to a vet.

Figo's coverage options are very flexible. You can choose among the following options for annual coverage limits, deductibles, and reimbursements:

  • Annual limits: $5,000, $10,000, Unlimited
  • Deductibles: $100, $250, $500, $750
  • Reimbursement: 70%, 80%, 90%, 100%

It's worth noting that customers who choose 100% reimbursement are ineligible for unlimited coverage and must choose between the $500 or $750 deductible options.

What's not covered

While it's important to understand what a pet insurance company covers, it's arguably more important to understand what it does not cover.

For starters, Figo doesn't cover pre-existing conditions. However, if your pet has a curable ailment and shows no sign of recurring symptoms within 12 months of treatment, it may be eligible for coverage. Figo specifically looks at the 12 months prior to your effective date to identify pre-existing conditions or the time following your official adoption date.

Its base plan doesn't offer any preventive care, such as vaccinations, routine diagnostic tests, or spaying/neutering. It also doesn't offer coverage for exam fees. These coverages must be purchased as add-ons to the base policy.

Additional Coverage Options

Figo's "Powerup" packages include supplementary coverages at an additional cost.

Optional Wellness (Plus)

  • Wellness exam: $40
  • Vaccines: $50
  • Spay/Neuter or Teeth Cleaning: $75
  • Tests: $45
  • Microchip/Health Certificate $30
  • Deworming: $10

Optional Vet Exam Fees

  • Covers fees for office calls, emergency rooms, specialists, and examinations.
  • Covers food prescribed by a vet for treatment of an illness: $250 per term

Extra care pack

  • Advertising/reward for stolen pet: Up to max annual benefit
  • Travel delay/canceling/interruption due to life-saving treatment for pet: Up to max annual benefit
  • Cremation/Burial expenses: Up to $250
  • Boarding while owner is hospitalized: Up to $150
  • Pet is stolen/lost for over 30 days: Up to $150
  • Owner is legally liable for property damage caused by pet: $10,000

Figo Pet Insurance Cost

The cost of pet insurance will vary by your pet's age, breed, gender, and where you live. We ran the numbers with different pet profiles and found the typical cost for dogs and cats of various breeds.

To get a better idea of how much Figo pet insurance costs, we'll look at how much a pet owner living in New York City would pay in pet insurance premiums. We chose New York City for our quotes because it is one of the most expensive places to receive vet care, which insurance premiums will reflect. Your premiums will likely be lower than the prices below.

We acquired the following quotes for a Figo plan without any add-ons and with a $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement, and $10,000 coverage limit:

Breed2-year-old (monthly)6-year-old (monthly)
French Bulldog $65.72$101.73
Labrador Retriever$46.06$71.32
Golden Retriever$41.37$64.04
German Shepherd$45.14$69.84
Standard Poodle$34.68$53.69
Mixed Medium (21-50 lbs)$32.30$50.01

In our quotes, prices for the vet care add-on changed with the breed and age of the dog. However, the wellness package was a fixed $16.50 monthly.

Let's go over premiums for a New York City cat covered under Figo's discounted policy with a $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement, and a $10,000 coverage limit.

Breed2-year-old (monthly)6-year-old (monthly)
Ragdoll$20.11$28.95
Maine Coon$20.11$28.95
Devon Rex$21.16$30.46
Exotic Shorthair$21.16$30.46
Persian$20.11$28.95
Mixed Breed$18.35$26.42

In our quotes, prices for the vet care add-on changed with the breed and age of the cat. However, the wellness package was a fixed $16.50 monthly.

How to Purchase and Manage a Figo Policy

To purchase a Figo policy, you'll need to obtain a quote on its website. You'll need to be prepared to provide your pet's name, species, breed, age, and sex. You'll also need to provide your ZIP code, as your location one of the most important factors when pet insurance companies calculate your premiums.

Once you obtain a quote, you can choose one of Figo's pre-made plans or customize your plan, adjusting your deductibles, coinsurance, and annual limits to your needs. You'll have an option to buy Figo's vet fees and wellness add-ons. After you finalize your purchase, you can add the extra care package by talking to a Figo agent.

Figo encourages pet parents to submit 24 months of veterinary records with their application. However, if you do not have medical records, it will use your first vet visit after the policy's effective date to check for pre-existing conditions.

It's worth noting that Figo has a one-day waiting period for accidents, a 14-day waiting period for illnesses, and a six-month waiting period for orthopedic conditions. Orthopedic condition waiting periods can be waived with an orthopedic exam completed within the first 30 days of the policy period.

How to File a Claim With Figo

You can file a claim with Figo by going to your Figo Pet Cloud and uploading a picture of your paid invoice to the app. All claims must be filed within 180 days after the date of treatment.

You'll need your vet to send Figo the last two years of your pet's medical records, including any notes. Like your doctor would with your medical care, submit all invoices to ensure the deductible is calculated correctly.

Of note: Deductibles are calculated with your coinsurance. For example, if your coinsurance is 80%, you would expect to be responsible for 80% of veterinary expenses after your deductible is paid. However, many pet parents don't know your 80% coinsurance also applies to your deductible. So, if you had a $1,000 deductible and a veterinary bill of $1,000, $800 would be applied toward your deductible, after which you'd be responsible for $200 (with 80% coinsurance rules applied) before your coverage kicks in.

Figo Customer Service and Claims Experience

Reviews of Figo on Trustpilot are generally good, receiving an average of 4.0 stars out of five. Customers reported positive experiences talking to customer services and quick payouts for filed claims.

That said, 19% of customers gave Figo one or two stars. Customers mentioned having problems filing claims and Figo repeatedly asking to refile paperwork. Some pet owners were also disappointed to find that Figo doesn't cover prescription food.

Figo's customer service team makes an effort to respond to all reviews, both positive and negative, within a few days. Many of Figo's responses are copy-and-paste stock message, but when customers have specific issues, Figo will engage with the issue.

Figo Pet Insurance Alternatives

See how Figo compares to three other options for pet insurance coverage: Healthy Paws, Lemonade, and Nationwide.

Figo vs. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance only offers a single plan with unlimited coverage. Figo offers various levels of coverage, so you have more control over your monthly premiums, but you may pay more out of pocket.

With Figo, you can add features to your pet insurance policy, including a rider for exam fees and wellness treatments. Likewise, Figo's policies cover curable pre-existing conditions and do not impose an age limit to insure your pet. Conversely, Healthy Paws doesn't cover curable pre-existing conditions, whether they're cured or not, and won't insure pets over 14 years old.

Figo allows you to pay for coverage on 100% of costs after your deductible. Healthy Paws only covers up to 90% of qualifying veterinary expenses. Both provide unlimited annual coverage, but you may prefer Figo's plan flexibility if you're looking for a more affordable option.

Overall, Figo is the clear winner for its comprehensive, flexible, affordable coverage.

Figo vs. Lemonade Pet Insurance

Lemonade offers one of the most flexible pet insurance policies on the market. Its base plan doesn't offer much, especially compared to Figo, but with all of its many add-ons, Lemonade Pet Insurance can go toe-to-toe with the best policies. As a result, Lemonade policyholders can precisely control how much coverage they get, ditching the coverages they don't need or want, which will save them money.

Figo and Lemonade also have highly flexible coverage amounts. Lemonade lacks unlimited coverage, but its limits go up to $100,000 annually, which will cover just about anything your pet will need throughout the year. Lemonade also has options for $20,000 and $50,000 annual limits. These coverage levels are nice for people who want more than $10,000 of coverage per year without a sharp jump in premiums, like Figo's jarring increase from $10,000 annual limit straight to unlimited coverage. However, Figo's 100% reimbursement option is still hard to beat for customers who want to limit out-of-pocket expenses.

When it comes to cost, Figo and Lemonade are, once again, extremely comparable. Lemonade policies can be extremely cheap, cheaper than Figo. But when you customize Lemonade's policies to match everything that Figo covers, the premiums are roughly the same. They both offer several ways to save on policies with Figo's 15% discount for Costco members and Lemonade's 10% discount for bundling and 5% discount for paying annually. Additionally, both providers offer a 5% discount for enrolling multiple pets.

Ultimately, Figo and Lemonade are neck-and-neck. Figo is best for people who want the most comprehensive care, while Lemonade is best for people who want more flexibility in their insurance policy.

Figo vs. Nationwide Pet Insurance

Despite being one of the more recognizable names, Nationwide offers underwhelming pet insurance, especially compared to Figo. Nationwide Pet Insurance offers three plans: medical, medical with wellness, and whole pet care. Its medical plans cover accidents and illnesses, while whole pet care also covers congenital and hereditary conditions. It's important to note that the whole pet care plan does not come with wellness care.

Choosing Nationwide means you'll have to accept some trade-offs, choosing between wellness or congenital condition coverage. You won't have to make those sacrifices with Figo, which allows you to add wellness to its comprehensive plan. That said, Nationwide does provide coverage for exotic pets, which is unique in the pet insurance industry.

Quotes for Figo were also cheaper than Nationwide. Nationwide offers a 5% discount for enrolling multiple pets, but so does Figo. Figo also offers a 15% discount for Costco members.

Ultimately, unless you have an exotic pet you want to insure, it's hard to see a reason to choose Nationwide over Figo.
