Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Review 2025

If you have one of Liberty Mutual's other policies, its pet insurance may be of interest for bundling purposes, but for other pet owners, it's probably best to look elsewhere.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Overview

Liberty Mutual is one of the world's largest insurance companies, offering multiple branches of financial protection for consumers. You may know this provider best for its auto, home, and life insurance policies, but Liberty Mutual has also been insuring pets since 2020.

One of Liberty Mutual's greatest benefits is its saving opportunities, offering up to 20% off for bundling multiple types of policies, including pet insurance. It also offers a 5% military discount, 5% off for insuring two pets, and 10% off for insuring three or more pets. This is on top of premiums that are already fairly affordable.

Liberty Mutual's coverage is also comprehensive. It offers three tiers of coverage: accident-only, accident, and illness, and accident and illness plus wellness. Its illness coverage includes coverage for alternative treatments, behavioral conditions, and hereditary/congenital conditions. Its wellness plan offers coverage for dietary foods and supplements as well as spaying/neutering.

All of its plans have a 14-day waiting period. While this is relatively long for accident and wellness coverage, it's standard for illness. It's also a very short waiting period for ligament and knee conditions, which usually have a six-month waiting period.

On the other hand, Liberty Mutual's glaring exclusion is its policy toward pre-existing conditions. While almost all pet insurance companies do not cover pre-existing conditions, some companies will stop considering a condition pre-existing when your pet is symptom-free for a set period, usually six months to a year. Liberty Mutual does not cover any pre-existing conditions, whether they are curable or not.

It also offers relatively limited options for coverage, offering a maximum of $15,000 in annual limits. While pet insurance companies don't necessarily need to have unlimited coverage, you'll find yourself hitting that limit quickly if your pet is diagnosed with a serious illness like cancer.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Plans

Liberty Mutual offers highly customizable pet insurance policies, with the flexibility to use any vet you choose. The company also does not terminate coverage for older dogs, and provides an extremely straightforward sign-up experience with clear, simple guidelines.

As with most insurance companies, Liberty Mutual does not insure pre-existing health conditions. However, you can purchase three tiers of pet protection through Liberty Mutual for insurance against future issues:

  • Accident-only
  • Accident and illness
  • Accident, illness, plus wellness

You can further select the amount of coverage that best fits your needs within Liberty Mutual's three insurance plans.

Annual maximum: $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000

Annual deductible: $250, $500 or $1,000

Reimbursement percentage: 70%, 80%, or 90%

Now let's get into each of Liberty Mutual's pet insurance plans.

Accident-only coverage

As the name implies, this insurance plan only covers unexpected medical bills that may arise from an accident, an attack from another animal, or some other incident of this nature. According to Liberty Mutual, the following expenses are eligible for reimbursement under accident-only coverage:

  • Accidental injuries (including to permanent teeth)
  • Euthanasia or anesthesia due to an accident
  • Cremation and burial expenses due to an accident
  • Ingestion of a foreign object (up to two treatments per policy year)
  • Accidental death

Accident and illness coverage

This policy covers all of the eligible expenses above, as well as common illnesses such as:

  • Illnesses including cancer, influenza, and kennel cough
  • Alternative medicine
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions

Accident, illness, and wellness coverage

Liberty Mutual's most comprehensive pet insurance plan includes all of the above coverage, as well as up to $525 in fixed-amount payments up to the following limits for the wellness treatments below:

  • Routine physical examination (wellness exam)
  • Intestinal de-worming and parasite removal
  • Routine dental cleaning
  • Spaying or neutering
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Heartworm test
  • Fecal examination
  • Prescription medication
  • Dietary food and vitamin supplements
  • Vitamin boosters and vaccinations

Note that covered prescription medication only covers medicine dispensed with a written prescription from a veterinarian. Additionally, all coverages offer 100% reimbursement up to the annual limit instead of your selected reimbursement.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Cost

Liberty Mutual pet insurance is highly customizable, with 81 total cost options between annual deductibles, annual maximums, plan options, and reimbursement percentages.

To get a better idea of how much Liberty Mutual pet insurance costs, we'll look at how much a pet owner living in New York City would pay in pet insurance premiums. We chose New York City for our quotes because it is one of the most expensive places to receive vet care, which insurance premiums will reflect. Your premiums will likely be lower than the prices below.

We acquired the following quotes for Liberty Mutual's accident and illness plan with a $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement, and a $10,000 annual limit.

Breed2-year-old (monthly)6-year-old (monthly)
French Bulldog $58.04$71.10
Labrador Retriever$52.33$63.11
Golden Retriever$53.65$64.95
German Shepherd$55.16$67.06
Standard Poodle$53.65$64.95
Mixed Medium (26-59 lbs)$48.65$57.94

In our quotes, springing for the additional wellness option was an additional $35.77, regardless of the dog's breed and age.

Let's go over premiums for a New York City cat covered under Liberty Mutual's accident and illness plan with a $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement, and a $10,000 annual limit.

Breed2-year-old (monthly)6-year-old (monthly)
Ragdoll$26$31.50
Maine Coon$26$31.50
Devon Rex$26$31.50
Exotic Short-Haired$26$31.50
Persian$26$31.50
Mixed Breed$25.40$30.63

In our quotes, Liberty Mutual's plan that includes wellness was a fixed $34.26 more than the accident and illness plan, regardless of the cat's breed and age.

It's also worth noting that pet insurance companies will adjust your premiums annually, accounting for inflation and local pet care costs. Liberty Mutual reserves the right to also factor your pet's age into its annual adjustments. While this isn't an uncommon practice, not all companies adjust rates using your pet's age.

Discounts for Liberty Mutual Insurance Customers

According to Liberty Mutual, you could earn up to a 20% discount for holding multiple policies across the company's offerings.

When filling out your pet insurance questionnaire, you'll be asked if you're an active member of the U.S. military, as well as if you have other Liberty Mutual insurance policies. While the discount is not actively stated, your premium quote will reflect a 5% discount.

You will also receive a 5% discount per premium for insuring two pets through Liberty Mutual, or a 10% discount per premium for insuring three or more pets.

How to Purchase and Manage a Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Policy

To purchase a Liberty Mutual pet insurance policy, you'll need to obtain a quote on its website. Be prepared to provide your pet's name, species, breed, age, sex, and whether your pet is neutered/spayed. To be eligible for a Liberty Mutual pet insurance policy, your pet needs to have had a physical exam within 12 months of the date of enrollment.

You'll also have to provide some information about yourself. You'll need provide your email and ZIP code, as your location is one of the most important factors when pet insurance companies calculate your premiums. You'll also be asked if you have another Liberty Mutual policy (home/auto/renters) and if you're an active or retired member of the military.

Once you obtain your quotes, you can customize your reimbursement level, deductible, and annual limit. During business hours, you can contact a representative through the website's chat feature. We were able to get our questions answered immediately by a live customer service representative.

It's worth noting that all policies have a 14-day waiting period for accidents, illnesses, and wellness coverages.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Customer Service and Claims Experience

Liberty Mutual received an A rating for financial stability from AM Best. However, its customer reviews are overwhelmingly negative. The company's Better Business Bureau page has an average rating of 1.09 out of five, and its Trustpilot page has an average rating of 1.1 stars.

It's important to note that these reviews pertain to Liberty Mutual as a whole, not its pet insurance specifically. All the reviews we read pertained to the company's auto, home, and renters insurance. However, these reviews are an indication of the customer service you can expect from the company.

Additionally, it's worth noting Liberty Mutual's legal history. In October of 2023, the company was ordered to pay $7.7 million to policyholders — in the form of refunds, premium credits, and discounts — by the Minnesota Department of Commerce on charges of breaking state insurance regulation laws.

Liberty Mutual Pet Insurance Alternatives

See how Liberty Mutual compares to three other options for pet insurance coverage: Pumpkin, Healthy Paws, and Nationwide.

Liberty Mutual vs. Pumpkin Pet Insurance

Pumpkin Pet Insurance is among the best pet insurance companies for its comprehensive coverage, offering uncommon benefits such as prescription food and end-of-life benefits. While Liberty Mutual can match most of these coverages, Pumpkin also offers coverage for curable pre-existing conditions after your pet is symptom- and treatment-free for 180 days.

Pumpkin policies also offer more coverage, with an unlimited coverage option and deductibles as low as $100. However, policyholders are locked into a 90% reimbursement rate, which drives up its costs. As a result, Pumpkin is significantly more expensive than Liberty Mutual. Additionally, Liberty Mutual has several opportunities for discounts, offering up to 20% off for bundling, 5% off for enrolling two pets, and 10% off for three or more pets. Pumpkin has a 10% multi-pet discount, so if you just have two pets, Pumpkin may be a better option.

Ultimately, if you have a pet with curable pre-existing conditions or you want a higher coverage limit than Liberty Mutual can provide, Pumpkin is the better option. However, if you just need a peace-of-mind policy for a healthy pet, Liberty Mutual is the better choice.

Read our Pumpkin pet insurance review.

Liberty Mutual vs. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

Healthy Paws Pet Insurance offers one unlimited coverage policy with many of the same coverages that Liberty Mutual offers. However, Healthy Paws does not offer wellness plans, which Liberty Mutual does.

Because all Healthy Paws policies have unlimited coverage, policies are relatively expensive, and, more specifically, are more expensive than Liberty Mutual's policies. It also doesn't offer any discount options.

The cherry on top is that Healthy Paws eligibility is very tight. Some pet owners might find that their pet is only eligible for 50% reimbursement or only qualifies for accident-only coverage. Additionally, Healthy Paws doesn't offer pre-existing condition coverage, regardless of whether that condition is curable.

Ultimately, Healthy Paws possesses almost all the flaws that Liberty Mutual has and then some. It may provide unlimited coverage, which Liberty Mutual doesn't, but there are better companies that offer unlimited coverage.

Liberty Mutual vs. Nationwide Pet Insurance

Nationwide and Liberty Mutual are both massive insurance conglomerates, known for their coverage across a wide range of consumer and commercial needs. Both offer three tiers of coverage for pet insurance. While Liberty Mutual offers a more traditional structure of accident-only, accident and illness, and accident and illness plus wellness, Nationwide's plans are more complicated.

It offers an accident and illness plan that lacks hereditary and congenital condition coverage, an accident and illness with wellness plan that also lacks hereditary/congenital condition coverage, and its Whole Pet plan, which offers congenital/hereditary coverage but no wellness package.

The way Nationwide structures its plans can be frustrating, forcing customers to choose between hereditary condition coverage and wellness. Additionally, its deductibles and coverage limits are tied to which plan you choose, so there's very little room for customization.

Nationwide's plans are also generally more expensive than Liberty Mutual's and it doesn't offer any discounts for bundling, just a 5% discount for enrolling multiple pets. It's also worth mentioning that Nationwide issued non-renewal notices to 100,000 customers in May of 2024.

Ultimately, between these two insurance conglomerates, it's hard to see a reason to choose Nationwide over Liberty Mutual.
