Wagmo offers straightforward pet insurance plans with three deductibles to choose from and the option for 100% reimbursement coupled with wellness coverage for your furry friend. However, all policies are capped at $20,000 annually.
Business Insider compared Wagmo to the best pet insurance companies and found it to offer below-average pet insurance with quite a few exclusions and limitations. However, its wellness package — which can be purchased independently from its pet insurance — is a standout offering.

Spot Pet InsuranceWagmo Pet Insurance Overview
Wagmo Pet Insurance offers standard accident and illness coverage. Customers can opt into 100% reimbursement. It locks customers at a $20,000 annual limit but is still one of the cheaper pet insurance companies. It also offers a 10% multi-pet discount, making it a solid option for multi-pet insurance.
Wagmo also offers wellness coverage in three tiers, the most expensive of which offers some uncommon benefits like virtual training and grooming, though all tiers lack coverage for spaying/neutering. Pet owners who purchase any wellness package will have unlimited access to virtual vet chats and video sessions. The best part of Wagmo's wellness package is that it can be purchased independently of an insurance policy, as many pet insurance companies that offer wellness only offer it as an add-on to insurance.
While Wagmo could be one of the best pet insurance companies, it's held back by its many exclusions. It doesn't offer any coverage for pre-existing conditions, curable or incurable. It doesn't cover prescription food, alternative treatments, and dental surgeries, and it only offers 50% reimbursement for prescription medicine. It also has a per-incident limit of $10,000 and a lifetime cap of $100,000. Yet another issue with Wagmo is that it can adjust your premiums based on your claims history.
Ultimately, Wagmo offers affordable coverage, but pet owners may find better options elsewhere, free of Wagmo's many limitations. However, if your pet insurance provider of choice doesn't offer wellness, you can go to Wagmo to supplement your coverage.
Wagmo Pet Insurance Plans Available
Open to pets of any age in all 50 states, Wagmo can shield you financially if your dog or cat is injured or sick.
All accident and illness insurance plans from Wagmo cover the following:
- Prescription medications
- Emergency vet visits
- Virtual, in-home, or in-office care
- Hospital stays
- Surgeries
- X-Rays
- Ultrasounds
- CT scans
- Laboratory tests
- Cancer treatment
- Hereditary and congenital conditions
- Prosthetics and orthopedics
- Hip dysplasia
- End-of-life care
- Pet ambulance services up to $100
While Wagmo plans offer the option for 100% reimbursement, you may also be able to select a reimbursement amount of 90%. A per-incident coverage cap of $10,000 also applies with $20,000 total annually. This means your pet will only have up to $10,000 in coverage for a single incident of cancer treatment, hip dysplasia, or any other expensive injury or illness.
Most small incidents and even maintenance for conditions like diabetes are covered under a $20,000 plan. However, if your pet is in a severe auto accident, develops a large tumor, or faces other significant medical challenges, $10,000-$20,000 may not be as generous as you'd hope.
Wagmo Pet Insurance Exclusions and Limitations
It's worth mentioning some exclusions and limitations in Wagmo's policies.
Notable exclusions in Wagmo policies are spaying/neutering, prescription food, alternative treatments, and dental surgeries. Additionally, during the course of your policy's lifetime, Wagmo will only cover two anesthetic foreign body removals. It also only covers 50% of prescription medicine costs and only covers hip dysplasia in pets under 6 years old.
Additionally, Wagmo has a $10,000 per incident limit and a $100,000 lifetime limit. Once you hit that lifetime limit, you'll have to switch providers, which can affect your coverage for existing conditions. Additionally, Wagmo can adjust your premiums based on your claims history, which is an uncommon practice in the pet insurance industry.
Wagmo doesn't cover "curable" pre-existing conditions as some other insurers do. Wagmo defines a pre-existing condition as "any injury, congenital disorder, or illness that has been prominent and/or identified by a veterinarian prior to signing up for Wagmo Insurance or before the end of the waiting period."
Additional Coverage Options from Wagmo
In addition to regular pet medical plans, Wagmo offers three pet wellness coverage tiers. The three available tiers include a value plan, a classic plan, and a deluxe plan with the most coverage overall.
The chart below shows how these three levels of wellness coverage stack up in terms of included benefits, as well as how much each plan costs on top of your insurance coverage:
Value Plan | Classic Plan | Deluxe Plan | |
Cost | $25/month | $45/month | $65/month |

Wagmo Pet Insurance Cost
According to Wagmo Pet Insurance, pet medical coverage premiums depend on factors like your pet's breed, age, and where you live. That said, the company says premiums on dog insurance plans start at around $13 per month, and cat coverage starts at $9 monthly. It also offers a 10% discount for enrolling multiple pets.
To get a better idea of how much Wagmo pet insurance costs, we'll look at how much a pet owner living in New York City would pay in pet insurance premiums. We chose New York City for our quotes because it is one of the most expensive places to receive vet care, which insurance premiums will reflect. Your premiums will likely be lower than the prices below.
Business Insider acquired the following dog insurance quotes for a Wagmo plan with a $500 deductible, 80% reimbursement, and $20,000 annual limit:
Breed | 2-year-old (monthly) | 6-year-old (monthly) |
French Bulldog | $80.18 | $106.28 |
Labrador Retriever | $51.77 | $74.91 |
Golden Retriever | $51.77 | $74.91 |
German Shepherd | $60.20 | $87.31 |
Standard Poodle | $57.28 | $83.02 |
Mixed Breed Medium | $49.80 | $65.65 |
Let's go over premiums for a New York City cat covered under a Wagmo plan with a $500 deductible, 80% coinsurance, and $20,000 annual limit:
Breed | 2-year-old (monthly) | 6-year-old (monthly) |
Ragdoll | $33.21 | $40.56 |
Maine Coon | $33.21 | $40.56 |
Devon Rex | $33.21 | $40.56 |
Exotic Shorthair | $33.21 | $40.56 |
Persian | $33.21 | $40.56 |
Mixed Breed | $33.21 | $40.56 |
As you can see from the quotes above, pet medical coverage from Wagmo can be affordable for younger pets. However, we're comparing this to the industry at large. In addition, the prices are similar to plans offering unlimited coverage with no lifetime limits. So the value may not be as competitive as it initially looks.
How to Purchase and Manage a Wagmo Pet Insurance Policy
To purchase a Wagmo pet insurance policy, you'll need to obtain a quote on its website. Be prepared to provide your pet's name, species, breed, age, sex, and whether your pet is neutered/spayed. You'll also provide your email and ZIP code, as your location is one of the most important factors when pet insurance companies calculate your premiums.
Once you obtain your quote, you can adjust your premium by customizing your deductible and coinsurance. Your annual limit will remain at $20,000.
You also have an option to buy one of Wagmo's three wellness plans. These plans can be purchased without buying Wagmo's accident and illness plan.
Lastly, before checking out, you can add another pet for a 10% discount.
It's worth noting that Wagmo has a 15-day waiting period for accident and illness benefits, a 30-day waiting period for cancer coverage, and a six-month waiting period for ligament issues.
How to File A Claim With Wagmo Pet Insurance
For a treatment to be eligible for coverage, you must visit a vet within 48 hours of your pet exhibiting symptoms. Wagmo lets you visit any licensed veterinarian or pet care hospital you want, so you don't have to visit specific offices or branches to get coverage.
Once you're ready to file a claim, you'll log into your Wagmo dashboard online to begin the process. From here, you'll download a photograph of your receipt for care and an itemized invoice from the pet care provider. Wagmo also says you must submit your pet's entire medical history to receive your first reimbursement through the company.
Wagmo says claims are typically processed within 15 days.
Wagmo Customer Service and Claims Experience
Online reviews of Wagmo are very sparse. Over a handful of reviews on Trustpilot, Wagmo averaged 2.5 stars out of five. Quite a few more people left reviews on Wagmo HQ's Google page, averaging 4.1 stars. Customers spoke highly of Wagmo's claims processing time for wellness care, many reporting same-day reimbursements. Reports of Wagmo's processing times for accident and illness claims were a little more inconsistent.
However, some customers had issues with wellness exams being treated as non-routine. Additionally, some customers had issues with Wagmo treating certain illnesses as pre-existing and refusing to payout on claims.
Wagmo Pet Insurance Alternatives
See how Wagmo compares to three other options for pet insurance: Pets Best, Healthy Paws, and Figo.
Wagmo vs. Pets Best Pet Insurance
Pets Best Pet Insurance is a popular insurer, offering medical coverage for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens with the option to add a pet wellness plan. Pets Best stands out in a few areas, including the fact it has a vet direct pay option if your veterinarian agrees to receive payment from the company ahead of time.
Pets Best covers prescription medicine without the 50% reimbursement limit, covers alternative treatments, and its wellness plans cover spaying/neutering. However, wellness plans must be purchased with Pets Best's accident and illness policy.
Unfortunately, while Pets Best offers unlimited annual coverage, it has per incident and lifetime caps on its plans, which vary across its three tiers of service. Because of this, you'll run into some of the same issues that Wagmo has. However, Pets Best is one of the cheapest pet insurance companies. It doesn't adjust premiums based on your claims history, unlike Wagmo, though it will adjust premiums annually as your pet ages.
For people looking for cheap pet insurance, Pets Best is the better option compared to Wagmo. However, you should be wary of its limitations.

Wagmo vs. Healthy Paws Pet Insurance
Healthy Paws Pet Insurance is another pet insurer with no lifetime or per-incident reimbursement limits. Once you meet your deductible, you can get as much care as your pet needs as long as you pay your portion after reimbursement. This provider doesn't have any per-incident caps on coverage, either, so you can breathe easy if your pet has an expensive medical condition or falls victim to a significant accident.
Healthy Paws also lets you customize coverage with options like a $100, $250, or $500 deductible and reimbursement at 70%, 80%, or 90%. However, because all plans come with unlimited coverage, Healthy Paws premiums are generally more expensive than most pet insurance companies, including Wagmo. However, Healthy Paws does not base annual premium adjustments based on your claims history, unlike Wagmo.
Healthy Paws does not offer a pet wellness plan add-on for its insurance policies. However, customers who choose Healthy Paws may be interested in Wagmo's standalone wellness plan.

Wagmo vs. Figo Pet Insurance
Figo Pet Insurance is another provider to consider if you want pet insurance without any per-incident or lifetime caps. It provides coverage for alternative treatments, dental surgeries, and its optional wellness plan includes coverage for spaying/neutering. Figo also covers "curable" pre-existing conditions if your pet shows no signs or symptoms within 12 months of treatment.
Figo offers plans with varying levels of coverage and premiums. You can choose an annual limit of $5,000, $10,000, or unlimited coverage. You can also opt for a deductible of $100, $250, $500, or $750 and reimbursement at 70%, 80%, 90%, or 100%, though pet owners cannot have 100% reimbursement and unlimited coverage in the same policy.
Regardless, Figo's prices are similar to what Wagmo charges, despite Figo offering far more coverage without the limits present in Wagmo's policies. Figo also offers several discount opportunities, including a 15% discount for Costco members and a 5% discount for enrolling multiple pets.
Ultimately, it's hard to think of a reason to choose Wagmo over Figo.
